Interesting observations:

My Macbook Pro Retina 2.7/16GB/768 running 10.8.3 will only load UASP (USB Attach SCSI) Kext drivers ONLY when a UASP enabled USB drive is connected directly to the port. It will default to USB Mass Storage most of the time.

My 13" 2012 June Macbook Pro running 10.8.2 w/ USB 3.0 will always load the UASP kext regardless of the USB drive connected but it has to be directly connected. Even USB 2.0 sticks will load UASP drivers.

Both will default to USB Mass Storage (no UASP) if connected to any USB 3.0 hub.

I wonder if 10.8.3 made some changes to the handling of USB 3.0

Interesting catch, but the drivers will load through a hub I installed from USB3.com. 4 port 3.0 industrial hub.
Note, it was a 2013 iMac if that makes a difference. Drives were Caldigit AV Pro with 4 TB Hitachi Deskstar. Sys 10.8.3
