This is a tricky one - I've got a Ubuntu disk image for the PPC architecture, and I would like to access it from within Virtual PC. How would I be able to switch PPC from the virtual x86 architecture to the native PPC architecture so I can install Ubuntu on Virtual PC?

VirtualPC doesn't have that ability. It's whole purpose in life is to emulate the x86 environment. You could use Mac on Mac, or Mac on Linux, but I don't think they support Tiger.

How possible is running Linux as the base OS and then running OS X as a task? I'm not 100% sure about whether or not Mac-On-Linux supports Tiger or not.

Client OS support:
- Mac OS X (10.1-10.3.3)
- Mac OS 7.5.2 to 9.2.2
- Linux

maybe it will support tiger, but it's most likely untested and i'd prefer to be able to run linux from within OS X if possible
