Never quite sure
Just a little thing, but it is bugging me because I organise my photos in folders (as large thumbnails) and navigate to them in Finder.

Suddenly, when downloading digital photos from my camera, Image Capture displays thumbnails with black borders. They appear this way in the Finder too.

I have a feeling this is something that got changed in the 10.4.4 update because images downloaded prior to this (10-Jan-06) look fine.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to get the 10.4.3 version back? Or perhaps just the previous (3.0.3 ?) version of Preview (not 3.0.4), as this might solve the issue.

Here is an example of before and after the update (the jpeg is still on my camera and now downloads with the black borders. It is also more pixellated). I can manually alter the thumbnail by copy-pasting, but this is laborious for multiple photos. Also, the option to "Show icon preview" in Finder prefs (Apple+J) overrides such a thumbnail image, and still shows black bars - hence I think the problem is with Preview's integration into the Finder.

Cheers for any suggestions/fixes...

I can't even get the preview app to open anymore. Not sure if this is a result of the .4 update, but after an hour on the phone with an Apple care specialist (who suggested I re-install .3, and then re-install .4) I threw in the towel and now use iPhoto as my default JPEG viewer.

Is it safe/possible to install 10.4.3 after 10.4.4 ?

According to the AC specialist it first requires an Install & Archive from the .3 Utility Disks that came with the PB G4 (or other full backup). Seemed like way too much effort to regain the use of a minor app. I'm hoping to get copies of that app from a friend with .4 installed, and see if by replacing mine I can get rid of the corruption.

Same thing happening on my Power Mac after the update. Doesn't really bother me that much, but it did get my attention at first.

Yes, this does seem painful. I'd like to just get Preview from 10.4.3 off the DVD (assuming it is compatible with OS10.4.4).

If your friend's version works for you, please let me know. And also if he/she would like to host a copy :)

Well, it bugs me that updates break existing parts of the OS. It feels distinctly Microsoft.

No new ideas anyone?

Honestly - this is really bugging me. I can't easily even open, copy, and paste the desired image into the mini thumbnail contained in the info window, because for some inexplicable reason, my portrait orientation photos open in portrait in Preview (good), but when I copy-paste this image into the mini info thumbnail, the thumbnail is created in the landscape orientation (Bad). (The image itself still opens in portrait.)

iPhoto bugs me even more with its obtuse filing system - fine for basic viewing photos, but a big pain once you start to want to edit them/delete them/back individual ones up, or just plain find each file in the FINDER.

Also, it, unlike Preview, doesn't display the detailed Nikon EXIF info (ISO etc)

Rant over, I guess I have to archive and reinstall 10.4.3
