Sony Computer Entertainment has once again used the words "monthly" and "fees" in reference to PSN, no doubt pricking the ears of a thousand forum squabblers.

Speaking in an interview with Nikkei Japan, SCE technology platform boss, Masayuki Chatani said the platform holder will "face difficulties" if it becomes dependent on the "sell-and forget model".

"Servers and the like have running costs... after we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services," he said.

"We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like.

"We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways," he added.

Well I hope this doesn't happen. The big thing about PSN is that its adequate and free. Now if Nintendo start charging for their service I will balk.

Im not trolling but...

As long as the money is used to give the PSN network more services I can see no harm in a subscription service. On the other hand if the subscription is just swallowed up by Sony, then that is where conflicts may occur.

One of the major things I like about the PS3 over the Xbox 360 is that playing online is free. If Sony started charging for it, I guess I wouldn't be playing Madden 2010 online anymore.

I don't play my PS3 enough to justify paying fees to play online.
