Ok...I was editing an image in Photoshop, and I needed to go to the menu and undo something. Then I realized that something was up: Letters were missing everywhere. For example: Edit was Edi. I also took a screen shot, in case anyone wants to see it to help me out, just ask me and give me your email and I can send it to you. This just really creeped me out. The screen shot I have is of my buddy list, with the letters missing on most of the screen names. Another thing that was odd was the letters that were missing changed, they didnt stay the same. Well, thanks for any help, sorry for panicking hehe

Do you by any chance have Norton Anti-Virus installed?
I had a similar problem and it was Norton causing it...
I noticed missing letters in PS, Illustrator, MS Office and Pagemaker...

Do you have Suitcase installed? Do you have the "Override system fonts" checked? If so, that might be the problem. I had some weird beavior kinda like what you have when I installed Suitcase until I figured out it was because of that...

I've found that different settings of anti-aliasing on the type will affect how the type renders on screen.

'Smooth' often being the most troublesome...
