I have had this problem for maybe years now, from when I got the HDD to the latest and greatest Snow Something.

I'm just happily using my Mac and suddenly, usually when I click some sort of menu item, it pauses. Then I hear my backup disk spin up and only afterwards will it continue.

This practice has continued across several OS X versions and reformattings of internal and external drive.

The menu item in question should not be touching any files on the external disk. Or any files at all really.

I'm using the disk to store Time Machine backups, a linux git clone and some torrents. I'm puzzled as to why OS X would want to access any of that.
