UK Credit Card necessary to buy iPhone in UK?

Hi,
Is it true that you have to pay with an UK-based credit card when buying an iPhone in the UK? Or any credit card (like in the US)?

Credit/Debit card, No cash.

Do you know if it may be any credit card or only credit cards registered in the UK?

I paid with a US American Express card.

I did have to activate it with my UK bank, though.

When I bought my phone in the Apple Store in Glasgow we were asked Card or cash - there were certainly people paying in cash.

Same in the Kingston Apple store. When you got to the end of the queue they asked you Cash or Card?

Definitely some people were buying their iPhone with cash… Maybe it varied from store to store?
