Just bought a used iPhone 4 on Ebay

Carrier: Orange UK 10.0

Version: 4.3.2 (8H7)

Modem Firmware: 04.10.01

Can I Jailbreak this so it will work with a Tesco sim?

Very new to this so a fools guide needed.

It tells me the SIM card is not supported in iTunes

Ok decided to restore it first using the macrumours guide

i think this topic's been covered plenty of times already so you're just gonna have to keep on looking - fwiw i don't know how to unlock so can't help you.

sorry to break it to you but i don't think you're gonna get much help with this.

be a bit looser in your searching and be prepared to read a lot more bumpf than is applicable for your situation.

Ok I restored it.

Now I can't do anything only phone emergency numbers and iTunes says incompatible SIM.

I'm in the exact situation here, and I just looked on youtube and found some vids saying that you can jailbreak it then use ultrasn0w to unlock it. Is that wrong?

Yes that's false.
You can only unlock the iPhone 4 bb 01.59.00 that came with 4.0.2
If you're on any higher official firmware than that you're out of luck.

Pop into an orange store grab a payg sim slap it in and top it up with 20 quid. Then hop on oranges 150 customer service line and speak to them. It takes 7-10 days and costs the 20 quid u topped up

I used a cut down sim from orange a friend had so I can receive calls with that.

Orange said they will only unlock it after 3 months use... ... (They advised an Apple Store will unlock it?)

So there seems to be conflicting advice on the web on whether it can be unlocked by software

Its now 4.3.2 (8H7)

look at settings app->about->baseband version. if it is not 1.59.00 you cant unlock. the end.

Why didn't you ask the seller what the bb was if you planned on using software unlocking?
Don't be one of those nitwits who abuse the term brick. The phone is usable on orange.

Yes, I agree its been a learning exercise.

I have a teenager here who is impatient to get going.

So my options are:-

1) Wait 3 months, as have existing contract with other provider use as a Touch, later pay £20

2) Sell and get unlocked phone

3) Sim? Won't work on my bband IOS 4.3 (baseband 4.10.01)

The Gevey turbosim WOULD work with your software/baseband.

What are the downsides with that SIM?

Don't you have to fiddle with it everytime a signal is lost or the phone is rebooted?

Yes.

And you have to ring the emergency services to get it started. Which definitely in this country is illegal.

Anyway bought one now in UK on Ebay for £10 so I will post if it works.
