what's interesting is the "personal effects" tax free allowance. i don't have any further information, but i believe this allowance can only be applied for goods purchased during foreign residence, i.e. NOT for goods purchased during a weekend shopping spree trip to NYC.
basically, if you went the "honest" way, you may not save much in the end, especially if you don't get the U.S. sales tax refunded.
