I've read a few articles such as this one:

http://lifehacker.com/398539/send-free-sms-messages-using-the-aim-iphone-app

explaining how you can use the AIM instant messaging application on the iPhone to send SMS messages to other mobile users for free.

I've tried sending messages to a couple of UK mobile numbers via the AIM app but I get an error message back saying:

Unable to send IM
+44xxxxxxxxxx is unable to receive offline messages.

From the instructions I've read about it, there doesn't seem to be a distinction between US cell numbers or other countries (such as UK).
I'm not sure if I'm adding the number in the right place in the buddy details, or whether there's another issue I'm not aware of.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or how to do this in the UK?
