I'm doing up my new flat right now and need to get a new line fitted. I've had a look around at cable and ADSL options. I'm in the North East of England, so we don't have any fancy fibre optic jazz or any BT 21CN trials.

What I need is a fast provider that allows a decent amount of downloading (around 40GB at least) and offers line rental and free anytime phone calls (local and national). The line rental through the ISP is a must (if I go for ADSL) as you've just got to pay £10.50 to BT for line rental.

PlusNet are the only one I could find that offer 8MB, 40GB bandwith and free anytime phone calls (local and national), but at about £40 a month it's a bit much! Virgin (who have recently taken over every cable company here!) are an option but they use traffic shaping heavily and I'm concerned this could effect my work and more importantly, my online gaming!

Thoughts and advice appreciated. :)
