UK on O2 - Can I buy unlocked in U.S.?

Hi all

Ive read many arguments, but is it possible to buy an AT&T unlocked iPhone and use my o2 gsm sim in it from an iPhone 4?

I'm travelling to San Francisco tomorrow and would love to buy one outright. Ive seen some stores are selling them unlocked already?

Any advice?

Just wanted to update that I arrived in San Francisco and purchased an AT&T no contract iPhone 4S... all works great on o2 so far.
