Like many, I was disappointed that the Ultra 3 wasn't announced yesterday. I'm upgrading from the SS S8, and I still think I'll go for the titanium Ultra 2. My son is expecting my S8 anyway! 😂

I've had an Apple Watch since the original model, and I fancied a total change with the Ultra. I spent some time at the Apple Store on Saturday and I decided I really liked the Ultra, even though it's quite bulky for my small wrist. I am going to use my old SS S5 for evening wear.

Now have a few options to consider, and it would be great to hear opinions:
  • Order the Ultra 2 from EE today with the white Ocean band (my favourite band on the current model). But, is it worth waiting for the 'new' models to arrive? I know the 'watch' itself isn’t changing but I’m wondering if the 'build' date will make any difference?
  • Pre-order the Ultra with the Ocean band, but the only available option is the ice blue color, which I’m less keen on.
  • Pre-order the Ultra with the titanium Milanese loop. I like the look, but I'm not sure how practical it would be for running. Any thoughts?
  • Pre-order the Ultra in black, which would give it a totally different look from the current Ultra. But, I'm concerned that it might feel even less feminine on my small wrist.
Any thoughts would be fab :)

Thanks

So far, it looks like it's the exact same device, so if you're fine with natural titanium and don't care about the Hermès brand, I think I would just order the Ultra from a place where they can give you a good discount (meaning, not from Apple). You can then buy the bands that you want separately, it will probably be cheaper.

The black color of the Ultra 2 is genderless. If you like the color, get it.

I see no reason to wait for the next release.

As to the new band, be aware that if you are not very careful, it will scratch your watch. And it is not a good band for running. I suggest getting a second band like the Trail Loop for running.

Thanks - that is helpful :)

Why will the new band scratch the watch? I've only ever ordered stainless steel and they still all look great - is the Titanium that much easier to scratch?

Thank you - that is a good point! Although my son is trying to persuade me to get the black..... I think he is thinking of his next upgrade already! 😂

I don't know which band Robert was talking about, but when I tried the Milanese band, it made me feel like it could scratch the watch, so I returned it.

Oh, and I'm a small woman, but I've always worn the darker watches. It's never occurred to me that darker makes the watches look larger, though with something the size of the Ultra, who knows? If there's an Apple Store close enough to you, the best thing is to go see it in person.

Thanks - that’s good to know. I went to the store last Saturday to check I was happy with the size. I’ve had a watch every 2 or 3 years since the series zero and I just had assumed they would launch the ultra 3 - totally messed up my plans 😂.

I do have the original Milanese loop band for my smaller series 5 which is lovely but the clasp scratches easily and comes loose so no good for running but the new version looks like it will lock in place. I was hoping to avoid trekking up Apple for another visit but I think I might need to.

Thank you ☺️

I have had an original Apple Watch. Stainless. And then a Space Black Stainless Series 4. I just ordered a Black Ultra 2 with the Black Milanese and plan to use some of my existing bands or get a black ocean to go with it. I've been wearing a white with black holes and backside nike band on my SB series 4.

I don't like the Series 10 Jet Black for durability and wasn't sure I'd like the Slate Grey titanium, so I went with the Black Ultra 2 which I think is still on par or better than the Series 10 in almost every way. If I don't like it inside of 2 weeks I'll return it and get a Slate Grey Titanium.

Get a refurbished natural ultra 2 direct from Apple and save yourself £120
That is what I did upon yesterday's announcement, got it today, updating the software right now. It's way too big and heavy for my day to day use but for my high elevation training, hut trips and an upcoming peak climb in the Himalaya, it will be a welcome tool.

Thanks :) I used the white with black holes Nike band with my smaller series 3 and 5. I still use a white Nike sports band with my S8, but the newest version with the flecks is not nearly as nice. I hope you enjoy the black ultra :)

Enjoy your new ultra :) ... I've been so close to ordering it today but still wavering about the band ;-) I'm with EE and they are not showing any of the options for pre-order yet so I may find that is a deciding factor anyway!

As a quick update - I ended up ordering the natural Ultra 2 today from EE (my network provider) with the white Ocean Band as I spoke to the advisors and they only have the natural, and black, titanium Milanese loop in a medium or a large so it kinda decided it for me as I need it in small.

I'll pop into Apple next Friday and see if I am happy to order the titanium band too. I would have loved an Ultra 3 but I am still happy to be going for a different design after having various AWs since the S0.

Good luck with your choices :)

Amazon has the Ultra 2 on deal with a 14% discount. Since it was not updated this year and carries year old hardware there is no way I am paying full price. 14% off seems closer to a net present value for this device purchased today.
