I just checked out the Ultra at my local Apple Store, and while it isn’t for me (I do a little hiking on occasion, but that’s it. I also don’t like orange), I absolutely love the flat screen, so much so that I briefly considered it before deciding on the graphite SS 8. I really hope Apple makes future versions with the flat screen. It’s really great.

In general (like many products and brands) higher end product's futures work their way down the line. If the "protected" screen is well received it may well come to the 9.

I think at some point some kind of design change has to be made to the mainstream Apple Watch but at the same time I think the "pebble" form factor has grown beloved, in particular because it is very unisex and appeals to everyone in some way. I think if Apple made ALL Apple Watches flat screened like the Ultra they may have a significant population very turned off thinking it looks too sport, not dressy enough, and perhaps too masculine. I understand its all in personal perception and many women would enjoy the flat Ultra just like many men want the pebble.

They could consider the base Apple Watch with aluminum or stainless with the typical bubble screen, offer an upgraded titanium case with a flat screen, but not full on ultra form factor, and finally the ultra.

I don't need any of the extreme activity features of the ultra, the most exercise I do is leisurely walk through the park, but I love the flat screen, and would jump on it if it comes to the "regular" Apple watch.
