I’ve had a difficult time finding any information or similar experiences online, but I recently encountered a curious issue with my new Ultra Watch 2 and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this or if it’s normal behavior.

Issue: When my watch wakes up, it starts in night mode even if I’m in a bright room. There’s a noticeable delay (about a second) before it switches to the normal watch face.

Details:

  • Watch is updated to latest OS.
  • Watch is set to wake on wrist raise.
  • This happens consistently whenever the watch wakes from sleep.
  • The delay is brief but noticeable and somewhat annoying.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone else experienced this issue with their Ultra Watch 2?
  2. Is this delay normal for night mode to recognize a bright environment?
I’d appreciate any insights or tips you might have. Thanks in advance!

mine has been behaving like this since I got it on launch day. yes, there is a noticeable delay but it is certainly less than 1 sec for me, I perceive it as less than .5 sec but have not timed it.
I has never bothered me, had S0/3/4/7/U/U2 and it seems that behavior has been consistent, maybe for me due to S0-S4 did not have AOD

Thanks for the response. I'm going to continue to monitor it. I only have a few days to return/exchange it. Hopefully its not a hardware issue.

have you had an AW before with AOD or is this your first?

I have. My previous watch was a series 7 which did not have night mode.

Again, it’s starts when I’m in a dark room, the night mode activates. When I walk out to a bright room or daylight, I raise my wrist and it begins in night mode then it takes, let’s say, .5 second for night mode to turn off and return to my normal watch face.

Is this normal behavior or could something be wrong with the ambient light sensor?

Anyway, any feedback is appreciated.

there have been quite a few long posts re night mode and readability and such when U2 was first released, there have been updates to watchOS to address that. Since you're saying that you are close to your return window I assume you are at least on 10.4 so all those fixes should be there.
Also, there is an accessibility setting "minimum brightness", you can play with that and see if it makes a difference.

If 1 or .5 seconds really bugs you on an Apple Watch changing brightness, and you consider returning it, I don't think you will ever find happiness in life.
