Coming from a XS to a 12 (non Pro) I was so bummed that Apple went ultra wide for the 2nd camera, I was so hoping it would be a telephoto like the XS. But now that I've had a chance to use it for a few days I feel like I'll probably get a lot more use from the ultra wide than I would the telephoto. I'm still hoping for the day the entry level phones have all 3 cameras but I think it's the right combo with just 2 cameras.

How’s the digital zoom to 2x on the 12 compared with the 2x camera on the XS? I’m considering the same upgrade myself, and I’m worried I’ll miss the optical zoom. But I also know the 2x lens on the XS is slower, so I thought maybe it’d be a wash in anything but daylight. What’s your impression?

That's a great question. It would be cool if someone could do a side by side comparison between the two.

I will say on the 11 Pro in low light the default camera app just digitally zooms in instead of engaging the telephoto lens. Other camera apps will allow you to select the telephoto camera. In daylight there is a difference but its not really enough to care about if you’re just posting to IG. If you really want the telephoto for quality but are getting a mini (like I am) or the 12, a $100 moment telephoto lens will save you money and allow you to use the better quality sensor on the wide camera while still saving money over the pro. I bought one for my 11 Pro to get the telephoto to 4x zoom, but am going to just use it for the mini.

How is the moment lens- are you able to clip it on and use the standard camera app with no issues? And how is the sharpness and color in images when using that? I read some reviews comparing Moment and Sandmarc, both seem to be similar quality, I was also looking for a telephoto for my regular 11 (and to use with a 12 mini if I end up getting one).

Its great. I use it most with the default camera app. Sharpness is great. Even toward the edges its remains remarkably sharp for glass on glass. Coupling it with the better wide sensor has always produced better photos and videos for me when compared to the telephoto on the Pro. I like it enough that I’ll save the $300 moving forward by getting the mini vs the pro.

Yeah, exactly- it is a great way to avoid having to spend $300 on an upgrade to the pro model! Thanks for the feedback, glad the lens has worked out so well for you!

Just looked at Moment site, and it’s very compelling. Did you buy the M-series lens mount, and then get the tele moment lens? Not really digging their cases, so I would like to get the mount and just attach when I need it.

You could take a look at Sandmarc, too- they are seemingly equally as good as Moment, and they come with a basic case for mounting the lens, and have a clip that can be used instead of the case, too. (all included with the lens).

When I carried a full frame DLSR, a 24mm prime was my favorite lens. You can really get some unique perspectives. That is why, last week, I upgraded my Xr to an 11.
24 mm is just wide, like the normal standard wide angle lens on the iphone (26mm). iPhone ultrawide lens is equivalent to a 13 mm FF lens.

Oh awesome! I am going to check that out! Thanks! Would you recommend one over the other?

Just too keep on topic, I have the iPhone 12 pro. Had the 11 pro before it, and loved the ultra wide. Tele is also good, but I think the ultra wide produced cooler looking pics. Would love to have a good tele though.

To be honest I have not used either yet, but watched a lot of reviews online over the weekend as I was trying to make my decision, since both are around a $100 purchase. From the reviews I watched, it seemed it was a toss-up between the two, so you would be making a great decision on either. For me, I think I might go with Sandmarc- their lens clip works on your phone even if you have a different case already on it, and the case does not interfere as long as it is not a really thick one (like an Otterbox). I would prefer that over the required case that would be needed with the Moment lens.

Yeah, for sure wouldn’t want to have to use one of their cases. I like using the Apple cases.

Thanks, that's super helpful. In the moments where you don't have time to put the lens on, have you tried just cropping the image from the wide camera as opposed to using the telephoto camera? There will be times where I can definitely see using the Moment lens, but I'm sure there will be occasions where I won't have time to put it on before the opportunity passes.

Exactly! I've seen many posts over the last year of people (who don't have it) downplaying it but I love it. My favorite use case is when you physically can't back up anymore but thanks to the ultra wide you can still get everything in the shot that you wanted.

In case anyone is struggling with whether it's worth giving up the telephoto camera, I figured out how to calculate the percentage of photos you've taken with each lens (on a X/XS).

  • In Mac Photos app, create a Smart Album for wide shots. The filters are "Lens", "includes", and "back dual camera 4.25mm."
  • Create another Smart Album for telephoto shots. Two filters this time. First one is "Lens", "includes", and "back dual camera 6mm". Second filter is "Photo", "is not", and "portrait". (Portrait photos have the same lens type in the metadata, which isn't helpful for our purposes, so I'm excluding them.)
  • Add up the photos from the two smart albums (wide and telephoto) and the "Portrait" album in the "Media Types" folder. Divide telephoto count by the total to get the percentage of your X/XS photos that are telephoto shots.
I'm at 17% telephoto shots, which may be high or low compared with other people. These smart albums also allowed me to find wide and telephoto shots taken close to each other in time to compare quality. At a first glance, it's hard to tell the difference between telephoto shots and a cropped wide shot in all but the brightest sunlight. Might be different for other people, but that's what I've found so far.

Usually those types of moments are kids in the yard and in daylight so the pro switches to the telephoto. Cropped in they look OK, and if I like the shot enough I’ll usually make a collage with it and some other less detailed shots. I’ll never print them off though. Usually if I am going to a kids game or something I take the moment lens. Make sense?

Yes, makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Interesting to look at the comparison. On my 11, (which has just wide and ultra-wide) I am also at 17% ultra-wide shots.

Would be interesting if others can chip in numbers.

Agreed love ultra wide if i had to choose between that and telephoto i would pick ultra wide. Certainly now that we have night mode on ultra wide lens for the iphone 12s

I wish the ultra wide lens had better quality. You loose a lot of details with the ultra wide lens compared to the wide lens. Here's two shots comparing wide vs ultra wide that I took with iPhone 12. Unfortunately I already sold my iPhone 11, otherwise I could compare them.
