Britain.
My UMBP hard drive is making a clicking noise whenever its in my lap and there's a jerk in movement when I stand up, plonk it down on the table, or pick it back up and put it on my lap.

Is that just the SMS kicking in?

I've not had a HD failure before but after reading more and more about them, I'm paranoid its that.

Yes, that's good.

I just tested it, if you move the MBP up and down a little faster than usual, the SMS kicks in, but if you move it sideways faster than one would under normal circumstances, the SMS doesn't kick in. Maybe I wasn't fast enough.

Ya happened to me too and ran to these forums for help. Supposedly it's just your Mac thinking it's falling and securing the hard drive or something like that. They shouldn't scare us like that :p

That's what the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) is for.

It seems to be more "active/sensitive" in Unibody MBPs, than in my 2008 white MacBook, ore even the iBook (which had no SMS of course, only the clicking noise for failing).
