I have a couple of questions regarding clamshell mode on my computer that I am hoping that someone can answer for me since I have not been able to find a recent topic about my model and the issue anywhere.
As the topic states I have a 15" unibody MacBook Pro from mid 2009.
Just this Christmas i got an external monitor for it and have an Apple bluetooth keyboard and soon the new magic mouse.
I've been running the MacBook pro the past two days in clamshell mode with the lid closed. I dual boot both Windows and Mac. On the Mac side the machine it runs fairly cool as I only use it for web browsing, IM, word prescessing...etc...basically stuff that is not that taxing on the system. I am not concerned with this side of the unit.
Now on the Windows side of my computer I have Steam, and specifically Orangebox. Team Fortress 2, Portal and the Half Life 2 series. My question is this. If I am running Half Life 2 lets say, with the lid closed, is it SAFE to play a game like that without it ruining the monitor? The lid was fairly warm when I opened it back up again after playing HL2 for over an hour or so. Is this getting proper ventilation or should I leave the lid slightly cracked in order to make sure that air is getting in there?
I read elsewhere that running a 3D game like that with the lid closed is not good for the screen and will ultimately take away from the life of the display. Are the LED displays hurt that much if they are left closed when 3D gaming and making the system warm or are they built to be run like this in clamshell mode or should the screen be left cracked to vent?
Hoping someone can state if it's safe to play a 3D game with the lid closed or if its better cracked/open or not and that there will not be significant damage done to the unit if left shut while gaming like this.
Also does anyone recommend Insomnia for shutting the lid so that the machine does not go to sleep and goes right to the external? Cuz I could just turn that off and shut the lid later when I want to put it in my bag right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys and gals!
