This a problem which may have started with Ventura, not sure. In 13.4 when deleting large numbers of mail messages (> 20 or so) after hitting the delete button the messages disappear from the messages list window. The "moving" progress bar at the bottom left hangs on message 1, but sometimes goes through all of the messages. The message list clears, then it repopulates with all of the supposedly deleted messages. The mailbox message count is decremented but all of the messages are still in the mail folder.
After working with Apple Support we determined that this happens if Yahoo mail is set to move deleted messages to one of the folders in the Yahoo preferences. If it is set to Trash on my Mac the messages disappear immediately. Messages from other mail services such as iCloud seem to work fine.
