iPod touch Unable to check/select songs on iPod via iTunes

I have the iPod Touch plugged into my Macbook Air. In iTunes, the checkmark box in front of each song is grayed out and I can't add a check to the songs.

Thanks for any help.

Click on "Sync only checked songs and videos" on the overview screen of the connected device. Then click on the Sync or the Apply button in the right bottom corner. See the pic attached to the post.
