unable to connect with SSH

since about a month ago I'm unable to connect to *any* SSH server using either the OpenSSH client included with SL or the latest one installed from MacPorts.

debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent

it just gets there then hangs forever, even when connecting to localhost.
I'm running 10.6.8. I haven't changed anything since it last worked, it just suddenly stopped.
