Unable to cut anything - copy-paste is OK

Hello,

As a complete newbie in the mac-world, I am faced with some challenges since everything is (fortunately) not identical to the windows world.

One that is driving me nuts is that I am unable to cut anything in almost all applications and folders. I know the shortcut is what-that-keys-name (ctrl in windows) + X, but it doesn't work, since it is always "greyed" out/inactive.

Could someone explain why that is? I should say that most, not all, of the files were copied over via an external HD from my old windows machine.

you cannot cut files in Finder but you can cut text in all applications. drag and drop + spring loaded folders can be used as a substitute along with the Finder's keyboard shortcuts for items.
