After the pop up asking me if I want to remove only unlocked items or all, the trash removal program crash crash out leaving the trash bin untouched.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

If you're having this problem, try rebooting your system then run Disk Utility > Repair Permissions on the main drive. It might help resolve it...

I had empty trash hang once, but I think it was related to the new iMovie (trying to delete a clip that I had flushed out of iMovie), and iMovie has been very buggy for me.

My issue with trash is that it seems slower, and ALSO it does an odd count thing. It counts up to the number to be deleted, then starts show negative numbers. The progress bar doesn't advance, and then it's just plain done. Very odd.

dollars to donuts this will resolve your issue. it's probably something similar to what bking mentioned in his post

Yes, booting into my recovery partition and running disk utility to repair permissions seems to have done the trick.

I gotta remember to try that first...

I have had this problem before and I had to run:

sudo rm -rf /Volumes/Western\ Digital/.Trashes

(it was on my external drive)

Number of files remaining to delete goes into negative territory. No big deal but would be nice if they fix it.

Started with about 50,000 files to remove, the progress bar shows the process has been completed, but it went on to show negative number of files remaining, and now it's approaching -80000 files to remove, and it's still running...

It's only about 20 GB in the trash, and has taken 5 hours already, and its' still not done.
:confused::confused:

The remaining file count is now -150,000 and it's more than 7 hours now, still running. Odd.

You can fix the problem by killing the trash itself.

This can be done through the Terminal, but warning you must know how to do it properly.

It's getting nowhere, so this is what I did instead:

1) Copy out what I wanted from the external drive.
2) Reformat the external drive.
3) Do a force removal of the trash but holding on Option key and clicking remove thrash at the same time.

Appear to be running okay for now, but keeping the finger crossed.

Update: Yes, it's a success. Finally the trash is clean.

10.9 here

I have Xcode.app stuck in my trash. Navigating terminal, Trash It, nothing has been successful. Secure Empty trash shows 16 files but Trash shows one, and "ls" on the Trash folder in the terminal shows nothing.

Suggestions short of reinstalling, formatting, etc.?

When all else fails, double check the file destination. It was on an external hdd. Problem solved.
