unable to get airdrop working

I tried using air drop from my mac and nobody shows up then I tried to use it on my iPhone nothing works. I also read and did the detailed directions but still nothing. I am on the same network and bluetooth is on.

Are you trying to use AirDrop between a Mac and an iDevice (e.g. iPad) ?

If that's the case, then it won't work since Mac AirDrop is not compatible with iDevice AirDrop.

is airdrop open on both computers?
it's definitely a bit glitchy for me as well but it will eventually work.

I'm having inconsistency with AirDrop in Mavericks too, sometimes I will see the computer but then it would keep disappearing and reappearing and if I tried to send a file, the other computer would never receive a prompt. With Mountain Lion, it was flawless.
