Unable to get stock Mail app to sync with Gmail

Has anyone had an issue with this or successfully done it? It just tells me Cannot Get Mail, connection to the mail server failed. Every time I open the app. I've tried killing the app and restarting my phone, no luck.

Mine is set up via Exchange.

Any Gmail users here??

Luckily the Gmail app seems to work perfectly fine. I just wanted to check out the new app :(

My Gmail is working over EAS

Do you have 2-factor authentication? That's what's stopping me. I'm getting the same error.

I just used Mailbox instead.

I have no idea. Is that where they text you or something? Why would that be an issue? It worked fine on iOS 6...?

If that's the case, how do you authorize it?

Google killed Exchange for new devices. I bet they see iOS 7 as a new device.
