Unable to get to home screen

I first noticed this today on my iPhone 3g but had problems with my old one regular iPhone too. My iPhone when pressing the unlock button or the home button will not unlock at all? The screen will not come up to allow you to unlock the iPhone by swiping your finger. If I call the phone it will let me accept the call but once the call is over the phone is then locked. Anyone else ever run into this problem
