I'm trying to reinstall Windows 8.1 on my iMac and get the following error:

The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

The odd part is that my disk IS a single partition as shown in the attached pics ... any help would be appreciated.

I'm very confused. If you are reinstalling Windows, where is your existing Windows partition? You should have been able to reinstall it in the existing Windows partition.

Your boot selector shows a Windows partition, but your diskutil screen shot does not. Were these screen shots taken at different times?

On a different note, why are there two recovery partitions? Is this normal for El Capitan?

As you can, plainly, see .. there is no Windows partition. The screenshots were taken about 30 seconds apart. The two different recovery partitions I think came about because at one time I was running both 10.10 and 10.11 beta.
