I remember reading a rumor or something saying that you can only purchase the iPhone with a credit/debit card, you can't use cash.

Is this true? If so, does ATT sell gift cards? If they don't take cash, I was going to purchase a 400$ gift card.

Weird, my dollar bills say "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private." on it.

That seems to mean that I can use it at the AT&T store!

The AT&T stores I've been to do not have cash registers. So therefore they cannot take cash. They can scan a card and run credit or debit, however all this may vary on location. Best bet is to call.

Thats what I thought, but I swore I remember someone/people saying you couldn't use cash to pay for the iPhone...

that was only at apple stores, we have always accepted cash. i have not read anything stating otherwise...

I paid for the original iPhone with cash right before they disallowed it. I'm going to say if you don't hear anything before launch date, assume you can pay in cash

So you work at AT&T, and will be accepting cash? Do you guys also have gift cards?

US Department of the Treasury said:
The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.
That seems to sum it up. They can restrict it to whatever they want. They want a link to your bank account.

if they don't have gift cards at at & t, you could always go get a prepaid visa or something

Alright thanks, I plan on purchasing a 800$ giftcard just incase. I say this because I'll probly have to pay a deposit.

Why on earth do you not have a debit or credit card?

I very rarely carry cash and I resent having to use it for parking meters and suchlike. Everything goes on my Visa Debit.

Same with me!
Wachovia Visa Check Card all the way!!

Cash slows things down.

I think Walmarts have those prepaid cards with the Visa logo as well, if that's more convenient. A lot of people take their paychecks there and just put all their money on one of those, instead of getting a typical bank account. I believe you can track the charges and the balance online too.

I asked my friend who works at ATT if they will take cash, or just credit/debit and he told me:

"credit/debit only, we have to follow apples rules"

I called the AT&T store in Fort Worth and the manager answered and I asked him what forms of payment are acceptable for purchasing the iPhone 3G and he said that cash, credit and debit cards.

I'm split paying, I'm paying cash and debit.
