Ok, so I have my iPhone 17 Pro and attempting to set up from my old 14 Pro. My 11 Pro has an eSIM, so of course the new phone doesn't have a SIM inserted.

When I get to manually log into my Apple Id on the new phone, I constantly get "Verification Failed - An uknown error occurred".

I've tried using a different WiFi network (I have two at home).

I also tried setting up the phone as new, but still have this same error when trying to log into iCloud. Entering an entirely different password also fails with the same message. I've validated my Apple Id password is entirely correct by logging into the web site.

How do I solve this?

Exact same issue. Very frustrating, tried a few different things but still no luck. I have a physical sim so don’t think your eSIM is the issue

Tried a fresh reset and changing my iCloud password but still the same. On my 3rd attempt at setting up the phone now

I also note that the time on my phone is set to 05:41, so still on US time, maybe the disparity in the time is causing the problem?

I had this for an hour or so today setting up a new iPhone Air. After multiple restarts I went on Chat with Apple Support (required signing in with my ID which was fine). Before the chat even started the error went away and it is now restoring from iCloud.

Seeing that I wasn’t alone, I suspect it’s a server-side issue at Apple’s end.

Edit to add that the Restore from iCloud time estimate is showing at 1 hour, which is much longer than I’d expected.

Mine just worked on the 3rd attempt after doing nothing different to the previous attempt so do suspect server side issues as someone mentioned

Gone for the 17 pro max in blue but the black iPhone air is so tempting

I have always learned to wait after the day of first release to setup my phone. Apple is getting slammed with a ton of setup procedure requests right now, and thru the day. Tomorrow will not be as busy.

I'm on a chat with apple support. Told them what has happened and they want me to share diagnostics with Settings->Privacy->Analytics - completely forgetting that I can't set up the phone.

Sigh. Support wants me to go into a store to get this sorted out. They claim this is the only support request they've had with this problem.

Now in the process of setting my old phone up for the wife and am having exact same issue with the apple id failing. Annoyed

I've seen reports this may be related to Sky mobile or Sky broadband. Seeing a few similar reports on the Sky customer support forums.

A few hours later and although the iPhone is now fully set-up, I can’t login using Apple ID on my Watch Ultra. Keep getting ‘An unknown error occurred’

EDIT to add that I turned off WiFi and it logged in immediately. I am on Sky Wi-Fi so maybe it is indeed the culprit!

It’s probably your WiFi router. Use hotspot WiFi on another device as advised by Apple chat. I had the same problem and worked for me.

I experienced a similar issue. I got to the point of the set up process, where it sends the 6 digit authentication code to my other Apple devices to authenticate my Apple ID. I wasn’t getting the codes at any of my Apple devices, even if I asked it to send the codes again. Tried over and over. First time I’ve ever had that happen. I ended up erasing the new phone and starting from scratch. Same thing happened.

It wasn’t until I clicked the option of “I can’t get to my other devices,” where it provided the option to text or call me with the code. That worked, as it texted the code to me. If I knew that option was buried there, I would have done that from the start! I’m guessing it’s some sort of server issue, like what others have said above. I’ve gotten so used to a somewhat-easy set up process for new Apple devices that this threw me for a loop. After that, everything has been smooth sailing. Hoping no more issues!

It finally worked for me, eight hours after i received the phone - i didnt do anything special, it just finally worked.

I also contacted Apple who called me very quickly to my surprise. They said it’s a known issue and to try it without WiFi which I did and it worked straight away.
Encountered the same issue then doing a 13 pro max to a 15 pro max, tried again with WiFi off and it worked straight away.

Hoping everyone is sorted.

i tried for 6 hours with the same error - 3 advisors and a senior advisors - they are ringing me back tomorrow. If we cant fix it then it could be a return/replace as it is fairy new... how much newer could it be? That said the advisors were very good, but we couldnt find a fix.. yet.

I also had a problem with my Apple ID. I actually dragged out my old usb-c ethernet adapter and plugged it into the phone. Might be a coincidence but the problem resolved immediately.

I kept getting that as well but luckily I left my 14 Pro on without sim connected to WiFi and was getting password reset messages to it
