This has never happened before. When I try to transfer some music from my iTunes Macbook (mountain lion) library to the plugged-in iPad, the songs do not transfer.

Any ideas what would cause this?
 
Subscribe to iCloud, around $28 per year. All your music on both devices will sync in iCloud and appear in both devices when you have them plugged into a power socket and wifi on.
 
Make Sure

Make sure you are not dragging and dropping in attempt to sync your music. Make sure you are signed into your iTunes account on your mac, and the same account on our iPad. When selecting the music you want on the "music" tab in iTunes under your device, make sure you hit apply. If this doesn't work make sure you are up to date with software/firmware on both mac & iPad.
