Unable to zoom via scroll gesture - option grayed out

I am a fan of control + scroll to zoom the screen.

However since upgrade to Yosemite, I lost the option. Found where to enable it in Preferences > Accessibility > Zoom, but the option is grayed out and not available to me.

Any ideas why? Have searched and come up empty, tried turning different gestures on/off in trackpad options (this is on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro).
