Unactivated iPhone 4S Problem.

I have an Verizon iPhone 4S my friend gave me that has a clean esn and I'm going to activate it soon.

I was just wondering if an unactivated iphone should have the 3G logo in the status bar or not because I do not see one and I wanna know if it needs to be fixed or not.

So basically is an unactivated phone supposed to have the 3G logo in the status bar or not?

If its not activated then it cannot connect to the network and no 3G logo or anything would display on the top left corner.
