'Unbricking' software

I was told that I need to unbrick my iphone and flash the memory before I can install the proper software on it. Does anyone know a good way to do this for free? Right now it has the pineapple quickpwn program on it (which doesn't do anything), and it also has a program called INdependence installed on it, and that program doesn't do anything when I follow the instructions in the Readme document. Is there any way to fix this?

You don't need "unbricking" software. There is no such thing. Put the device into DFU Mode and do a restore in iTunes.
