So how much RAM is Chrome actually using, according to this screenshot?

Are we supposed to add them all up? Why doesn't Activity Monitor just do it for us?

The hierarchical view (which you're using) does not add up the sub-process values. You'll need to do that yourself. Other programs like iStat Menus can combine process automatically.

My guess as to why AM doesn't do it for you is because it's just a simple hierarchical view, should it add all processes to launchd? OF course not. Third parties can afford to include lists of apps that should be added up (like web browsers).
