I was looking for ways to speed up Photos sync and came across iCloud Caching server for High Sierra. I had some questions about it.
1. On the host Mac. Does Photos and other iCloud services use the cache directly or store duplicates in their normal locations?
2. Are there significant performance benefits to using this on an external SSD over an external HDD? Devices will be connecting via Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac. The Photos library is over 80,000 pictures.
3. How does Optimize Storage work? Given the size of the library. MacBooks and iOS devices have Optimize Storage enabled. Will this work with the cache server or do these devices have to go through Apple's iCloud Server?
4. How are uploads handled? When a device on the network uploads new Photos. Does it go directly to the cache or upload to Apple's servers then you have to wait for the cache to sync?
5. How reliable is this service? Does it keep reliably synced? Do devices reliably use it when on the local network?
6. Is this via local network only? Can devices connect to it rather than using the iCloud servers when roaming? The network has a Gigabit fiber optic internet connection plus 300 mbps Cable connection through a load balancing router. I'd think this would be faster even when roaming than using Apple's servers.
7. Is there something more advanced I'm missing? Such as a full local iCloud server option. So, nothing even has to use Apple's servers.
