Yesterday I installed a bunch of mac software updates and basically what I want to do is reverse it so that my computer runs the way it did before. There are programs that have stopped working. I'm thinking about backing stuff up, reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling programs from the original files. Would that work? or do updates stick around no matter what? Thanks much. btw: I'm running OSX version 10.4.11

That is your only option. There is no way to uninstall or roll-back the updates. It would be a neat addition if Time Machine offered this as an added feature that way when Apple Updates don't go as planed you have something to fall back on. You could perform an archive and install without backing up your data but I always recommend having a good back especially when performing a reinstall of the OS.
