I got severely ill and went to a state sponsored clinic to get tested for COVID19 - although they determined that they were done testing for it, I had all the classic symptoms.

I applied for unemployment on March 23, and my case is still considered "pending". Is this normal, or is there something wrong? Unfortunately North Carolina's DES isn't accepting phone calls even during the work week, so I can't just call and ask.

These aren't "normal" times for state unemployment offices all across the country. Obviously they've had a sudden huge upturn in the number of claims that they have to process......so your current "pending" situation might be a result of that.

If your claim is related to the CARES act federal benefits, then a lot of state unemployment offices are still creating their programs to provide those benefits, especially for those who wouldn't normally qualify for state benefits.....so that could leave you in "pending" until they are organized.

A friend in NYC and his wife were both laid off from their jobs back in mid March. He was an independent contractor and she was an employee. He's still waiting for his claim to finish processing while she's started receiving benefits

I was furloughed in late March because of COVID and filed online. Got my first benefits two weeks ago and the stimulus deposits caught up by Friday. Just filed my weekly claim about an hour ago so the next deposit should be in around noon tomorrow.

No calls, no visits, I already had the prepaid card.

However, my situation may have been so easy because I was receiving unemployment benefits in late 2018 to early 2019 when I was between jobs. So AZDES (Arizona Department of Economic Security) already had an account on me.

A month seems long, but I can't even think how overloaded they are at the moment.

For the last week I know of many people calling and no one has been able to get an answer from the EDD due to them being overwhelmed with calls.
The number from their website listed is 833-978-2511 but no matter when one calls one can not get anyone to answer. Tomorrow unemployment numbers come out and unless the government lies and cooks the numbers I don't see how the numbers can be any good. Over the last week no one I know of was able to get a hold of anyone from the EDD.

The way they have it set up is one can not do much online without needing a particular number which they will not email you. Getting a hold of anyone to file has been almost impossible for many people.

116,870 first time claims filed in NH from March 15 and April 18 out of a workforce of 780,000. So people are getting claims filed though I heard that things were difficult for a few weeks. Look at your state and county numbers. I would guess a lot of people are making it through filing claims but state systems weren't designed for the current crunch.

what are you trying to do? they are indeed swamped, so people wanting to file a claim should really be filing through their online application

Wife is getting it. But we didn't have any issues online and she already had an account and PIN from a previous filing. But if anyone doesn't have BAU and has to call, they are doomed :( Heard most people can't even stay in a call or chat queue for over five minutes before being dropped if they can even get in a queue at all. They really need to upgrade those ancient systems.
