My old G4 Powerbook used to go to sleep for a few hours when the battery got too low, so I'd have a chance to plug in the power.
However, my Unibody Macbook just dies straight away, even when there is like (eg) 3 minutes left. This is sooooo annoying.

Does anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?

You need to perform a calibration of the battery by following exactly the procedure described here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490

The calibration will make the mac display the correct remaining charge of the battery and put it to sleep accordingly.
