Unibody Macbook Pro palm rest discolouration

I was just wondering if this is an issue on the unibody mbp's, since a google search only seems to show it happening on the old ones. I have a toshiba which has discoloured to the point of being black on the palm rest and obviously don't want the same thing to happen to my new mbp!

I know you can buy the protectors, but are they really necessary?
