Unibody Macbook Pro to TV RCA Problem

I recently bought some cables from monoprice to get a video signal out to an older tv, with no luck. The chain goes
Macbook -> Displayport to dvi
Dvi -> VGA converter
VGA-> RCA converter
to TV. I know its alot of conversion, which is what I assume is the problem, but i didn't want to have to buy another 30dollar minidisplayport converter. Any advice?
