I use headphones a lot. It seems that sometimes (not always) when I use them, and then close the laptop and disconnect them, and then open the laptop with the headphones not connected, I can no longer control the volume
However, this sometimes happens even when I unplug the headphones before closing the laptop.
I hit the volume+/- buttons, and it makes the little chirp sound and the bars increase and decrease but the volume doesn't change...
if I leave it this way, then after a little time the volume control in system prefs will cease to work as well, leaving me with no volume control whatsoever.
Is there a way to "restart" the volume controls?

A restart fixes the problem, but I don't want to restart every time
