Ok, so my girlfriend's mom has an iPhone 3G running firmware 3.1 It's never been jailbroken before, so there are no SHSHs on file with Saurik's servers. She would like to sell it, but before doing so would like me to jailbreak and unlock it. Is there an unlock available, specific to the OS 3.1. I do not believe there is a way for me to upgrade to 3.1.2 and avoid 3.1.3 because of the lack of SHSHs. Can anyone offer up any suggestions?

i think the answer is yes.

i had a similar question - and it seems as long as you have a 3G you can restore and point itunes to the 3.1.2 fw by holding the option key.

then i think jailbreaking/unlocking should be a breeze.

can anyone confirm that i'm right or wrong?

also - a side note, what happens to the baseband? (i'm at 04.26.08)

Pretty sure the baseband changes to whatever firmware you point it to. Unless you make a custom firmware.

Don't know of many people still on 3.1. Usually people want to downgrade firmwares and jailbreak/unlock, not vice-versa.

OP, hold option (Mac) or shift (Windows) and click restore. A window will pop up, find the 3.1.2 .ipsw file. Make sure not to restore to 3.1.3, as you will lose the ability to unlock.
After the restore, run Spirit (http://spiritjb.com). After that's done, install blacksn0w through Cydia by adding http://blackra1n.com to your list of repositories.
