I just got off the phone with an Apple care representative and felt the need to share my experience.
I have an older iPad 2 that has seen very little use (a gift to my mother who is a bit technologically challenged). Since it hadn't been updated in a long time I thought it would be a good idea to do so, however, when I tried to update the iOS through iTunes I received a message that the iPad needed to be restored before it could be updated.
There wasn't any music or important files on the iPad so I went ahead and did that.
That led to the "Unknown error(9)".
Searching the apple database it described the error as possible a security settings issue or a USB connection issue.
I tried to restore the iPad over a dozen times on 3 different machines (2 PCs and an iMac).
I even tried uninstalling all Apple iTunes products based off of this article;
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
The security settings were disabled on all machines and the USB cord was practically brand new. Even so I tried it with a different USB cord with the same result.
I finally conceded to going to a Genius bar and after the rep encountered the same (9) error he concluded that the issue was actually a hardware issue that the iOS update had 'revealed'.
So... A SOFTWARE UPDATE CAUSED A HARDWARE FAILURE?!?
When I pursued this further with Apple the customer relations rep I spoke with told me it was my 'choice to pursue an update, and because it was out of warranty, Apple was not responsible'. My choice...
APPLE: IF YOUR UPDATE IS GOING TO CAUSE A HARDWARE FAILURE, HOW'S ABOUT A F@CKING HEAD'S UP? I COULD BE USING MY OLD BUT PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL IPAD TO WRITE THIS RANT HAD I KNOWN THAT FACT.
Apple's products have always been more expensive, but worth it IMO because of build quality and attention to user experience. Sadly, it seems increasingly clear that since the death of Steve Jobs, those 2 qualities are not values that Apple still holds in high regard.
Rant complete.
