Hi!
I'm completely new to the unlock and jailbreak scene and would like some guidance from you all. My brother will be giving his phone (3G with 3.1.2 firmware) to a friend that needs to have it unlocked because she lives outside the country.
I've been trying to read up on the how to's and questions people ask, and based on this website someone posted, it seems his phone can be unlocked.

I have a Windows XP net book that still has iTunes 9.1 on it.
And it seems blacksn0w is the software to use to unlock it.
Is this all I need?
I've also read about backing up some data or something just in case the phone gets upgraded accidentally. Does blacksn0w do this as well or will I now require to jailbreak the phone?
I'm sure these are quite newb questions to you all, but I appreciate all the help.
