Unlock 3GS 4.3.3 on 05.16.02 - GPS Questions

I am interested in unlocking my iPhone 3GS.
I travel frequently and need the ability to use local SIM cards. My last $1400 data bill is still fresh in my mind.
I am no stranger to jailbreaking, however unlocking is new to me.
Obviously I need to install the iPad baseband 6.15.
My question is about losing the GPS functionality.
Is this only on GPS programs like Garmin or Mapquest or does it also affect the Apple iPhone maps functionality too?

Yikes! Couldn't you just buy a factory unlocked 4S for... like... half that???

It loses total gps function in everything that would need to use the gps chip.
Including maps and everything.
It might show your location miles away from where you are making it useless.

Well it looks like I am out of luck. My company is the one paying for my plan and they don't support iPhone. If I want a new phone I need to buy it myself or else take the crappy blackberry **** they are giving away at any moment in time.
I am now on the hunt for an iPhone 4 - unlockable of course. Is there a specific model or baseband I should be looking for? Factory unlocked units seem very pricy.
