My 2-year contract with AT&T is almost up ... I still love my iPhone 3GS and would like to keep it, but would really prefer to leave AT&T. Is it possible to unlock it to change to another carrier? And, if so, how do I do this with a month-to-month or pay-as-you-go plan? Do I pick a new carrier, get a smartphone, and switch-out the SIM card, or ... what?

Thanks much!

Unfortunately, AT&T will not unlock your iPhone. In addition to this, you can't get 3G data with your iPhone on T-Mobile because their frequencies are not compatible. If you go with T-Mobile and want data, you will be limited to EDGE speeds.

Also, you cannot use your iPhone on Verizon because their phones are CDMA whereas T-Mo and ATT are GSM.

You can, however, unlock your iPhone using the Redsn0w iPad baseband method. There are many tutorials available online that tell you how to do it and the risks involved.
