Unlock iPhone with Apple watch stops working

I had this set up previously and other than the activation issue earlier in the year it has mostly worked well. Recently though it just keeps stopping working. At the weekend I was out and about masked up and it did not work, it kept aslking my for my passcode or face ID. It the started working again and was ok for the rest of the day. Today however it is not working again.

It always happens when I really need it to work which is frustrating! Anybody else seeing this?
