I came here expecting to be able to unlock my 3GS but it seems that because I upgraded to 4.1 I cannot. What is the liklihood that a hack will be found in the near future? Are people still working on it or are they hitting a brick wall?

Firmware version - 4.1 (8B117)
Baseband Version - 05.14.02

The iPhone Dev Team have been working on an unlock forever it seems. Haven't heard from them in quite a while. Hopefully they're up to something good. Basically we don't know anything until they tweet it.

Yeah. :/ One option though is to use Redsn0w to upgrade to the iPad baseband (6.15.00) which is unlockable. There are some side effects though: Your GPS will die, and you will only be able to restore to custom firmware after this, you will never be able to update or restore to stock firmware in iTunes.

BUMP

I just wanted to check if there'd been any updates that would allow me to unlock my 3GS easily.

I'm not terrifically hopeful.

There will not be a software unlock for the 3GS basebands (5.14.xx, 5.15.xx, 5.16.xx) besides the older unlockable ones.
