sorry if this has been covered (I know there are a ton of threads, and I have read them).

My ex and her husband are upgrading their phones to the iphone 4 soon and I will inherit either her 3g or his 3gs (for a price of course), but both they've upgraded to iOS 4 already. My question is if I can downgrade to 3 to unlock and then upgrade back to 4. I read that phones running 3.1.2/3 can be unlocked then upgraded to 4, but I'm not sure about going from 4 to 3 back to 4. I don't know what the baseband is for the 3gs, so I might end up taking the 3g if i can't get the 3gs to work (I am hoping is that it's the older model/baseband since he's gets the new phone when they're released).

I had a first gen iphone unlocked and on tmobile up until I lost it about a month and a half ago and I've got some crappy phone right now that I'm using till I can get a 'new' iphone. Trust me when I say I'm having withdrawals.
