Unlock VZW 4s to use in Portugal

Hi all,
I have a friend who will be traveling to Portugal on business and she will need a phone to use. I have a 4s that I don't use anymore and would like to give it to her to use on her trip. Do I just call Verizon and ask them to unlock it? Also, will this phone work in Portugal? I figured that she could just pop in a SIM card from there and use the phone.

Call verizon and ask for them to unlock it for international use.
It will work abroad with any gsm sim.
It will not work inside the US on any other carrier but verizon.

Thank you! She only needs it for this trip to keep in touch with her family (who are also going with her) while she is working.

Great, just have her give them a ring and they should put the international unlock through.
